Georgian Deputy Speaker of Parliament Nino Tsilosani has questioned Western democratic standards following a vote by a German ruling coalition party to ban an opposition force, drawing a comparison to political tensions in Georgia.
“In Germany, a party that is a member of the ruling coalition voted to ban the opposition. If only they taught us that democracies don't ban the opposition?!” Tsilosani wrote on social media.
Her remarks appeared to reference the recent vote in Germany to ban the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which some lawmakers have accused of undermining democratic values.
Tsilosani used the example to defend Georgia’s ruling party’s critical stance toward the opposition United National Movement (UNM), which she described as “anti-state and anti-constitutional.”
“Working against the country and being an agent should be banned,” she added.
