Georgian Public Defender Nino Lomjaria says that former president Mikheil Saakashvili should call off his 50-day hunger strike as the protest may lead to fatal consequences.

She says that after Saakashvili suspends his hunger strike, the European Court of Human Rights, which also called on Saakashvili to do so, should  evaluate how the Georgian Dream government met its demand on ensuring proper medical care for the former president.

A medical panel composed of eight health experts under Lomjaria stated earlier this week that Saakashvili’s health condition is ‘critical’ and that he should be transferred to a civil clinic.

The Georgian Justice Ministry offered Saakashvili a transfer to Gori military hospital in central Georgia earlier today.

The opposition is now waiting for Saakashvili’s decision on the transfer.
