Georgian Public Defender Nino Lomjaria says that she supports the postponement of the October 2 municipal elections as the country is on the top of the world list for coronavirus daily cases and deaths.
Lomjaria has stated that “freedoms should be restricted when it is necessary” and that the elections are not only the election day.
“We all know that elections are connected with increased mobility, manifestations, assemblies of election commissions, etc.,” she said.
Georgian officials have stated that the postponement of the elections ‘is still not on the agenda.’
Coronavirus cases began to surge in Georgia starting July with daily cases hitting around 4,000-5,000 and deaths – 50-60.
More than 58,000 individuals remain infected with Covid-19 in Georgia as of today.
