The Georgian Parliamentary opposition said they were against the use of non-electronic ID cards in the elections, after the legislative body on Wednesday backed a bill proposed by their colleague Pridon Injia with its first reading, which allows the use of the cards ahead of the 2024 Parliamentary elections.

With several of them accusing Injia of affiliation with the ruling power, opposition lawmakers claimed through supporting the bill the Government planned to “rig” the race.

In his comments on Thursday, Public Defender Levan Ioseliani said he wished to see the use of only modern IDs in the elections, but said the Constitution “guaranteed” the voting right and voters should be allowed to participate in the elections with the identification documents they possessed.
