Teona Akubardia, an opposition MP, on Tuesday urged the country’s lawmakers to make a joint appeal for support to NATO ahead of the bloc’s Vilnius Summit in July.
In her address to the lawmaking body, the MP said the appeal should include the country’s “firm desire” to join NATO, as well as a request for further support amid the ongoing security challenges sparked by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
She stressed if joined both by the majority and the opposition, “considering national interests”, such an appeal would be more “valued”.
“I want to also call on the country’s foreign office to unveil its positions ahead of the summit, as well as the government’s efforts for the country’s progress on its path to NATO”, Akubardia said.
The alliance approved a tailored support package for Georgia during its Madrid Summit last year.
