Khatia Dekanoidze, an opposition MP, on Friday addressed the sanctions imposed by the United States on various Georgian officials, emphasizing the implications of this move.
According to Dekanoidze, those affected by the sanctions had already been notified. “This is an open list, which includes all those who undermine the democracy of Georgia,” she said. “As [US State Department spokesperson] Miller mentioned, these individuals have been informed that they are sanctioned. The list comprises members of parliament, police officers, and others, and it will continue to grow.”
“It is very hard to realize that we have a government that has been sanctioned by our strategic partner. This is the worst.” Dekanoidze said.
The United States has announced the first tranche of visa restrictions, targeting members of the Georgian Dream party, parliamentarians, law enforcement officers, and private individuals.
This action reflects ongoing international scrutiny and concern regarding the adoption of the foreign influence transparency bill by the Georgian ruling power, branded as a “Russian law” by its opponents and allegedly targeting critical voices in the country.
