Aleko Elisashvili, an MP of the Citizens opposition party, on Tuesday expressed skepticism over the possibility of opposition unity for the October general elections, citing the divisive behavior among pro-Western factions.

“In my observation, the opposition’s path to unity appears bleak. There’s a lot hindering it, primarily stemming from the leaders’ inadequacies and their distorted grasp of political reality. Excessive arrogance and ambition among many opposition figures have clouded their judgment, making it challenging to engage in constructive dialogue,” Elisashvili told the press.

He further criticized the former chairman of the United National Movement and affirmed his party’s decision not to align with Nika Melia.

“While everyone has the right to pursue their path and form political entities within the legal framework, the Georgian political landscape does not require further fragmentation. Instead, it demands cohesive action. Personally, I am resolute in not aligning with any venture marked by the symbol number 4, a sentiment shared by our party. We stand firm behind our distinctive identity, represented by the number 7, which we believe is unparalleled in the political arena. I extend my best wishes to Melia, but the forthcoming elections will reveal the extent of his support,” Elisashvili asserted.

Melia recently declared on social media that the 2024 elections will usher in revolutionary changes, symbolized by the number 4.
