Vakhtang Megrelishvili, an MP from the Girchi opposition party, on Monday criticized the proposed constitutional changes by the ruling Georgian Dream party against alleged LGBT propaganda, labeling them as “absurd and detrimental” to human rights.
The initiative, focused on what it terms “family values,” has drawn ire from the lawmaker, who argued it would “inevitably curtail” freedom of speech.
Megrelishvili highlighted concerns over the “vague definition” of propaganda within the proposed changes, emphasizing such ambiguity could lead to infringements on individual liberties.
He asserted individuals should have autonomy over their own bodies, expressing alarm over provisions that could impede personal choices.
Predicting a loss for the Georgian Dream party in the debate over the matter, Megrelishvili underscored the lack of societal priority placed on the proposed changes, echoing his sentiment that the drafted text was both nonsensical and encroaching on fundamental human rights.
The GD initiative to amend the constitution regarding family values was announced by Mamuka Mdinaradze, the leader of the parliamentary majority, during a press conference held at the party’s headquarters earlier during the day. Specific articles targeted for revision were outlined during the announcement.
