Opposition MPs are set to file a lawsuit against the foreign influence transparency law, branded as a “Russian law” by domestic actors and the country’s foreign allies, in the Constitutional Court, demanding confirmation of its non-compliance with Articles 22 and 78 of the Constitution and its subsequent cancellation.
According to media reports, 32 MPs will sign the lawsuit.
The Girchi party said it would not join the lawsuit, claiming they did not believe in the independence of the Constitutional Court.
In addition to the opposition, the president and 121 media and civil organizations are challenging the law in the Constitutional Court. The law, in effect since June 3, designates grant-receiving organizations as “carriers of the interests of a foreign power” and labels entities like the US, EU, and international funds that give grants to Georgia as “foreign powers.”
The adoption of the law was preceded by large-scale protests, violence against peaceful demonstrators, activists, and opposition MPs, and attempts to intimidate them. Following the implementation of the law, the process of Georgia’s integration into the European Union was halted. Additionally, both the European Union and the US imposed sanctions on the Georgian government, with an expansion of the sanctions package announced.
