Ana Tsitlidze, an MP of the United National Movement opposition party, on Thursday claimed the opposition’s message to Josep Borrell, the European Union High Representative who will visit Georgia later today, would be that the country should receive the bloc’s membership candidate status later this year.
“Despite the fact that the Russian Dream [in reference to the current Government] is doing everything to prevent the country from getting the status, we should also understand that along with the status, it is most important to hold fair elections, free elections in this country, because without them we cannot talk about the democratic development. That’s why we will have these messages with Mr. Borrell”, she said.
The EU official will meet with state officials, the members of the opposition and the civil sector while in the country, before his departure on Friday.
The Government officials have assessed the visit as “very important”, and claimed to use the “opportunity” to further support Georgia’s EU candidacy, accusing the opposition of taking actions to hamper the process.
