The Georgian opposition has slammed the country’s PM Irakli Garibashvili for his recent statement that “I was telling it would be Ukraine alone which would be suppressed and punished by the war,” and that “we can see no one who can stop this.”

The opposition says that the PM “once again insulted Georgians and stood by Russia in his statements.”

“This is what I was speaking about on February 25 (the day of Georgia’s Soviet occupation) that Ukraine alone would be oppressed and punished in this war,” Garibashvili told journalists yesterday.

He stated that what is happening in Ukraine “is extremely disturbing,” noting that more than 4,000 residential buildings have been demolished,  cities have been razed to the ground, thousands of civilians have been killed and “these tragic events continue to this day, this war, this calamity.”

“I stated that It would be Ukraine alone suppressed and punished in this war, thousands of Ukrainians would be killed, their territorial integrity would be violated and so it is, you see that a number of territories are already occupied by Russia in Ukraine and the process is still in progress. Unfortunately, we have not seen anyone capable of stopping this so far,” Garibashvili said.

In his previous statements Garibashvili said that “thanks to the Georgian Dream government” there has been peace since 2012 in Georgia, accusing the opposition of being destructive and willing to drag the country into the Russia-Ukraine war.

Garibashvili said that Georgia has not imposed sanctions on  Russia for its invasion of Ukraine as it would have affected Georgians much, stressing that the country has stood by Ukraine in all international resolutions and platforms.

“We have already sent 400 tons of humanitarian aid to Ukraine and we are doing our best to take care of the Ukrainians who have come here, be it for education, health care or any other need. We will continue to do so. It is a great wish and dream that this war will end as soon as possible,” Garibashvili said.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.
