The United National Movement (UNM) opposition party has plans to hold a rally in western town of Zugdidi at 20:30 today to demand the release of former president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili from prison.

The ruling Georgian Dream party is also holding a large rally in central Tbilisi today.

A mayoral election run-off will take place in Zugdidi on October 30 between the ruling party and the UNM candidate Anzor Melia, who came first in the first round of elections.

Saakashvili was arrested in Tbilisi just ahead of Georgia’s municipal elections on October 1.

He has been on hunger strike since then.
