The Strategy Agmashenebeli opposition party on Friday called on President Salome Zourabichvili not to present any candidate “selected through an opaque and formal process to the Parliament and to propose new, consensus-based, independent and impartial contestants” for the vacant positions of the chairman and members of the Central Election Commission.
“Per the Constitution and legislation of Georgia, the President has an obligation not to formally approach the issue of selecting the members and the chairman of the Central Commission, but through an independent selection commission, following the terms of the April 19 EU-mediated agreement, with a general consensus”, said the party.
The party suggested the arrested former security official, Ioseb Gogashvili, “has proven how the elections were rigged”.
