Orbán: 31 out of 32 NATO members want Russia’s defeat, Hungary stands for peace

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán believes that NATO’s objective of defeating Russia in Ukraine is a mistake.

In an interview with Hungarian State Radio, Orbán emphasised that Hungary was one of NATO’s “most loyal” members, yet he highlighted a difference in perspective. “31 of the 32 NATO member countries want to defeat Russia,” he said.

“Hungary’s position is that this is a mistake. Even if it means that we remain alone among the 32,” Orbán said.

He argued that Ukraine’s victory was not a necessity, noting that despite this stance, NATO continued to support the war. “Hungary is on the side of peace,” he affirmed. However, he also stressed that he did not want “even one square inch of Hungary’s territory to become a Russian military target.”

Furthermore, Orbán indicated that while Hungary will not obstruct NATO’s mission in Ukraine, it will refrain from participating in it.
