Over 90 Indian citizens deceived into fighting for Russia in Ukraine war

More than 90 Indian citizens have been deceived into fighting for Russia in the ongoing war in Ukraine, with at least eight reported deaths, according to Indian parliament member Vikramjit Sahney in a recent interview with TV channel Dozhd. Sahney noted that transferring the deceased individuals’ bodies back to India was currently impossible.

Sahney revealed that many Indians were lured to Russia with promises of employment. Upon arrival, they were coerced into signing contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense without an interpreter, only realizing their true situation when they were stationed at the front lines.

The TV channel also spoke to the family of Ravi Munu, an Indian citizen who died in the conflict. Munu was promised a job in a Russian transport company but ended up contacting his family from the front lines after arriving in Russia.

In response to the situation, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the issue during a July visit to Moscow, meeting with Vladimir Putin. Modi raised concerns about the demobilization of Indian nationals under contract with the Russian Defense Ministry and sought measures to prevent further recruitment. Putin assured Modi that he would assist in addressing both issues.
