Conflict expert Paata Zakareishvili has criticized the Ukraine peace plan associated with US President Donald Trump, saying it appeared to be written in Russia’s favor and bypassed key stakeholders, including NATO, the European Union, and Ukraine itself.

“The text is clearly written by Russia, but the problem is that Trump looks from above and does not take into account the major players affected by this issue,” Zakareishvili said.

According to Zakareishvili, while the plan conceptually addressed Ukraine, NATO, and the EU, it was drafted without the consultation or consent of the actors.

“Trump is still fascinated by major powers and ignores smaller states. He has an imperialist mindset, but thankfully, democracy in the US constrains personal ambitions. Americans act critically when necessary, often becoming frustrated with unnecessary bloodshed and wasted time in Europe,” he said.

Zakareishvili added that although the peace plan was conceptually coherent and could theoretically function, its implementation was unlikely to proceed as intended. He argued that Trump was imposing obligations on third parties without their agreement, particularly the EU and NATO, and expecting them to comply within a short timeframe.

“Every clause of the document seems acceptable to Russia, and a member of the G8 would benefit. But the problem is that Trump disregards the major players who are actually affected,” Zakareishvili said.
