Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Thursday criticized the European Parliament’s draft resolution that calls for Georgia to impose sanctions on Russia, deeming it “disgusting.”
During a recent press briefing, he condemned this “push”, claiming it reflected a disregard for the well-being of the Georgian people.
Papuashvili emphasized that such demands could lead to economic destabilization and increase the risk of military confrontation. He noted that the resolution was particularly troubling as it “openly suggests” Georgia’s obligation to impose sanctions on Russia, a stance that he believed did not consider the realities of the region and could jeopardize Georgia’s stability.
Furthermore, he asserted that if the Georgian government were to comply with these demands, it could result in severe consequences for the nation, potentially leading to an economic collapse. The official also criticized the timing of the resolution, suggesting that it attempted to influence public sentiment ahead of the upcoming general elections, and called for “respect for Georgia’s sovereignty in making independent decisions” regarding its foreign relations.
