The Louvre Museum in Paris closed its doors to visitors on Sunday following a robbery, France’s Minister of Culture Rachida Dati announced.

Dati said the theft occurred early in the morning as the museum was opening. No injuries have been reported.

Local newspaper Le Parisien reported that nine pieces were stolen from the Napoleon and the Empress's jewellery collection in the Apollo Gallery, including a necklace, a brooch, a tiara and more.

As reported, the suspects entered the building from the Seine River side, using a service elevator to access the desired room. Two men, under the supervision of an accomplice, broke the windows and made off with an estimated nine items from Napoleon and the Empress’s collection.

The Louvre, one of the world’s most famous museums, is located in central Paris. Once a royal palace, it now houses more than 35,000 works of art.
