The parliament of Georgia on Thursday passed amendments on gender equality with its first reading, as part of the European Union’s 12-point conditions.
Mikheil Sarjveladze, the chairman of the Human Rights Protection and Civil Integration Committee, had presented the draft law during the session. “I would like to introduce you to the package of amendments to two legislative acts, which will concern the project of amendments to Gender Equality and Regulations of the Parliament of Georgia.
“The change of both legislative acts is characterized by one main essence, and where reference was made to the competences for ensuring gender equality, there will be a reference to the need to take concrete steps in the direction of combating actual inequality. I think that it is a change of principle, which will unambiguously improve the possibilities of consolidating efforts to ensure gender equality”, said l Sarjveladze.
He stressed that a specific function would emerge, which would be focused not only on ensuring legal equality, but also on taking steps in a real and specific direction.
