Parliament refuses to register an initiative by ultra-conservative Alt-Info over banning rallies on sexual orientation

The Parliament of Georgia has not registered a initiative by the leaders of the ultra-conservative Alt-Info, which demanded a ban on demonstrating sexual orientation at rallies.

 

Irakli Kadagishvili, a Chairman of the Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, said on Monday that the leaders of Alt-Info, who also founded the political party Conservative Movement, presented the initiative  “with a number of violations.”

 

“Each initiative must be accompanied by an explanatory card, which was absent,” Kadagishvili said, noting that the initiative also lacked other mandatory documents.

 

Giorgi Kardava, Zurab Makharadze, Irakli Morgoshia, Shota Martinenko and Konstantine Morgoshia addressed the committee from Alt-Info with the initiative.

 

They called for an amendment to the Code of Administrative Offenses and demanded a ban on actions that “demonstrate, promote or propagate” sexual orientation.

 

Alt-Info and its Conservative movement are dubbed as pro-Russian by the Georgian opposition and various NGOs, demanding the government to take actions against them.
