Parliament Speaker calls for transparency on European Endowment for Democracy’s Funding in Georgia

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has called on Brussels to disclose details about the European Endowment for Democracy’s (EED) financial activities in Georgia. In a statement on X, Papuashvili emphasized the need for transparency, particularly in light of recent disclosures by the new US administration regarding the use of American taxpayer money for political purposes.

“Our society has a legitimate interest in the activities of this European foundation,” Papuashvili wrote. “Moreover, EED has already been implicated in scandals.”

He stressed that transparency in foreign aid spending is not optional but mandatory, urging the European Union to ensure full disclosure.

The statement comes amid growing scrutiny over foreign funding in Georgia, with the ruling Georgian Dream party frequently raising concerns about external influence on the country’s political landscape. EED, an EU-funded institution, supports civil society and independent media in Eastern Europe and beyond.
