The Kremlin has acknowledged that it is reviewing a proposed 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, which has received backing from European leaders and US President Donald Trump.
Speaking to reporters, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russian President Vladimir Putin had already announced a three-day unilateral ceasefire several days ago, and now Kyiv and its allies are calling to extend it to 30 days.
“We need to think this over. These are new developments,” Peskov said. “Yes, we see that Europe is clearly opposing us—very openly. We feel it, we know it, and by now, we’re used to it.”
Peskov also downplayed the threat of new Western sanctions in the event of a ceasefire breach. “We’re already used to sanctions. We know what to expect when new sanctions are announced, and we’ve learned how to mitigate their effects. So trying to intimidate us with sanctions is a waste of time.”
The ceasefire proposal came after a high-profile meeting in Kyiv involving German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Following the summit, the leaders held a joint call with President Trump to discuss the plan.
According to Ukrainian officials, Ukraine and all its allies are prepared for a full and unconditional ceasefire—on land, in the air, and at sea—starting from May 12 and lasting at least 30 days. The agreement aims to create space for serious peace negotiations and includes a deadline for Russia to formally respond.
