Germany’s Ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, has cited constitutional and legal requirements as barriers to opening EU accession negotiations for Georgia, stating that as things stand, it is “no way” feasible.

In a recent social media post, Fischer summarized the findings of Anton Hofreiter, Chair of the Bundestag’s EU Affairs Committee, who he said had spent 24 hours in Tbilisi.

The diplomat said the “article 23 of German Constitution and a specific law – for German lawyers EUZBBG – require approval of Parliament for opening accession negotiations. As things stand now, NO WAY this will happen”.
