Peter Fischer, the German Ambassador to Georgia, has released information about a proposal by the Alternative for Germany (AFD) party, which aims to end the visa-free regime for Georgia within the Schengen Area and halt the country’s EU membership process.

In a post on X, Fischer stated, “The title ‘For Georgia’s European Future’ has been accepted by three parties holding 57% of the seats and forming the government: the Social Democratic Party, the Greens, and the Free Democratic Party.”

He noted that the main opposition party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), agreed with the content of the proposal but abstained from voting since they were not part of its creation.

Fischer emphasized the implications of the AFD’s project for those in Georgia who support the party: “Their proposal includes the cancellation of the visa-free regime in the Schengen Area and the completion of Georgia’s EU membership process”.
