Georgian prime minister Irakli Garibashvili on Wednesday condemned the “LGBT propaganda” in the country’s one of the most popular McDonald’s restaurants chains, in reference to brochures in the happy meal children’s menu depicting a well-known British singer Elton John, his family and adopted children.

In his press comments on the sidelines of the National Cybersecurity Forum, the PM claimed the “LGBT propaganda” was “extreme” in kindergartens and schools abroad, which he said was “unacceptable”.

Garibashvili claimed he had been acquainted with the data by a foreign organization conducted in 30 foreign states, and as he said 22 percent  of the youth in France declared themselves as sexual minorities.

“I think this is alarming. I believe that, of course, every person has the right, it is the right of every person to choose the way of life, we do not interfere in anyone’s work and personal life, this is absolutely unacceptable, but on the other hand, the extreme propaganda that is already taking place in kindergartens and schools abroad is unacceptable”, Garibashvili said.

Temur Chkonia, the owner of the McDonal’s chain in Georgia said last week he had “nothing to apologize for” as the brochures were part of the campaign of the global network, stressing “Elton John is excellent”.

The part of domestic opposition and civil society organizations claimed by their “absurd reactions” on the brochures, the officials on the one hand attacked Chkonia for his anti-government stance, and on the other hand proceeded with their “pro-Kremlin campaign” to “demonize the west” in the public’s eyes.
