Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Thursday hailed his Government’s efforts in obtaining the European Union membership candidate status last year, as well as the domestic “economic growth” attending a session within the Davos Economic Forum titled “Dialogue on Diplomacy in the Western Balkans”.
Garibashvili emphasized the “significant progress” made in European integration since assuming office, culminating in Georgia’s attainment of candidate status. He highlighted the country’s “rapid economic growth”, stating, “In the last three years, Georgia’s economy has seen remarkable development, becoming one of the fastest-growing economies globally. We achieved a 10.5 percent growth two years ago, 10.4 percent in 2022, and seven percent last year, with low inflation persisting below one percent for the past seven months. We anticipate over five percent economic growth this year.”
The PM also underscored the stability of Georgia, both politically and economically, noting that the economy has doubled in US dollars since 2012. Garibashvili provided specific figures, stating, “Georgia’s GDP per capita in dollars has doubled from 4,250 dollars in 2020 to an anticipated 8,600 dollars this year.”
He also discussed the strategic importance of Georgia’s geostrategic location, expressing commitment to the development of the Middle Corridor as a viable alternative route. He highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the construction of a new deep-water port in Anaklia, the development of rail facilities, and plans for a new airport. The top official also stressed the importance of China’s interest in these alternative routes and thanked European leaders for their support, considering the granting of candidate status as a significant achievement for the government’s efforts in European integration.
