Georgian PM Irakli Garibashvili says that the country has sufficient stocks of flour and wheat, and that the turmoil around the issue has been stirred artificially by certain groups.
Speaking at a governmental session on Monday, Garibashvili said that the country’s flour and wheat stocks would be sufficient for about a month and a half time, while in late summer Georgia would have its own harvest.
“Representatives of the industry have been demanding the introduction of a tax on flour, right? – which, of course, will lead to an increase in the price of bread. It is not in our interests, nor in the interests of our people. Therefore, this agitation, I think, was absolutely artificially triggered, our country does not have any problems today. There are more than enough stocks of flour, there are also stocks of wheat in the country and in just a month, a month and a half time, we will already harvest our own wheat, so, there was no reason for any turmoil. It is clear that this issue was politicized by a small group of people,” Garibashvili suggested.
Russia and Ukraine have been major importers of flour and wheat to Georgia over years.
Currently the countries are at war which is expected to cause problems for flour and wheat imports for many foreign states.
