Georgian PM Irakli Garibashvili says that the government is working on the second national human rights strategy to ensure further and better protection of human rights.

Speaking on the International Human Rights Day today, Garibashvili said that the protection of human rights has been the ‘major priority’ for the Georgian Dream government since taking office back in 2012.

“Protecting human rights and freedoms is a top priority of our government.

The government of Georgia is taking steps to ensure equal, free and dignified conditions for all citizens of Georgia, regardless their affiliation to any group, as we believe that in order to build a democratic state, it is necessary to protect the interests of all groups and individuals,” Garibashvili said.

He stated that in 2013, the Georgian Dream government began work on the National Strategy for Human Rights, ‘which was the first in the history of Georgia.’ “The National Human Rights Strategy of Georgia for 2014-2020 was based on the idea of realizing human rights in everyday life and defined long-term priorities and objectives of the Georgian government to establish inter-agency, multi-sectoral, unified and consistent policies in the field of human rights,” Garibashvili said.

He stated that the government is now working on the second national strategy for human rights.
