PM’s initiative on legalization illegally built properties won’t cover Tbilisi – Mayor

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze on Wednesday said Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili’s latest initiative on legalisation of residential houses built illegally on privately owned lands in Tbilisi and regions, would not cover the capital city. 

 

In his comments, Kaladze highlighted a similar, large-scale amnesty had already been implemented in the city, and residents of Tbilisi could use the right to legalise properties for two years, after the Parliament in 2021 adopted related changes. 

 

He noted individuals were able to apply for legalisation until July of this year and that 500 applications had been approved, which Kaladze said had met safety and other criteria outlined in the law. 

 

“More than 600 applications are still being considered, which means that these properties may also become legal”, Kaladze said. 

 

He reiterated the Government’s approach the move could promote to the property rights of citizens and accounting of existing buildings and facilities in the country. 

 

The Government said earlier this week the initiative would concern more than one million citizens of the country.
