Polish president expected to demand Saakashvili’s transfer abroad – UNM’s Dekanoidze

Khatia Dekanoidze, an MP of the United National Movement opposition party, on Monday said Polish president Andrzej Duda was expected to join the recent calls of Moldavian president Maia Sandu over the transfer of convicted former president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili abroad for treatment. 

Citing Sandu “as one of the most outstanding pro-Western leaders in Eastern Europe, who is highly respected by the whole world”, the opposition leader claimed more western leaders would stand by Saakashvili. 

“I am sure that President Duda’s attitude will be exactly the same. The demand by world leaders will intensify even more, including in personal talks,” said Dekanoidze.

Taking to Twitter on Sunday,  Sandu said she was  “deeply concerned by the rapidly deteriorating state of health of Georgia’s former President Mikheil Saakashvili. Every human life is priceless and the gravity of the situation requires immediate transfer of Saakashvili to an appropriate hospital to save his life”. 

Saakashvili, who was arrested in Tbilisi in October 2021, claims he needs urgent treatment abroad as his health has deteriorated “too much” while in custody.
