Mateusz Morawiecki, the Polish prime minister, on Wednesday tweeted his country’s medical professionals were in Tbilisi to conduct a “comprehensive medical examination” of the currently imprisoned former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili.
“We do not leave our friends in need. At my request, a team of Polish doctors began a comprehensive medical examination of President Mikheil Saakashvili in Georgia,” the Polish official said.
Zurab Chkhaidze, the clinical director of the Vivamedi civilian clinic – where Saakashvili has been receiving treatment since May 2022 – said on Thursday a meeting with Polish professionals on Wednesday was “very constructive”, and that the visiting doctors had “approved” the treatment offered by his clinic to the former official, as well as medical checks conducted or recommended by them.
He also said Saakashvili put on weight, and expressed hopes the former official would follow the doctors’ recommendations.
Giuli Alasania, Saakashvili’s mother, on Thursday disapproved of the claims his son felt better, saying “as I see he remains in the same condition and looks very weak”. She added Saakashvili had put “only one” kilogram on.
Saakashvili, who currently holds Ukrainian citizenship, was arrested in Tbilisi in October 2021 on his clandestine return after eight years and is now serving his six-year term for abuse of power while in office.
The European Court of Human Rights in May rejected his transfer abroad on health grounds.
