Politico – US considers sanctions to safeguard democracy in Georgia

In a move aimed at safeguarding democratic principles, the US is considering imposing sanctions on Georgian politicians, Politico reports. 

According to reports from the American publication, a draft law obtained by them suggests that lawmakers and law enforcement officials affiliated with the ruling Georgian Dream party could become the targets of sanctions, alongside alleged Russian agents operating within the country.

The proposed legislation compels senior American officials to furnish Congress with information regarding “improper political influence, kleptocracy, and elite corruption in Georgia,” as well as details on suspected Russian and Chinese intelligence activities in the region.

This bill, if enacted, would empower the US government to levy sanctions against “government officials and other individuals responsible for undermining democracy, human rights, or security in Georgia.”

Travel restrictions to the US may be imposed on politicians and their families found complicit in activities reminiscent of Russian authoritarianism.

Sources indicate that the sanctions could also extend to Georgian law enforcement personnel and security service employees involved in quelling protests.

The draft legislation highlights concerns over the Georgian Dream party’s apparent inclination towards a policy of reconciliation with Russia, which is viewed as a departure towards illiberal governance.Furthermore, the bill underscores criticisms that Tbilisi has openly criticized US and other Western organizations dedicated to fostering democracy, while concurrently strengthening ties with Russia and China.

According to reports, South Carolina Republican Congressman Joe Wilson is expected to introduce the draft today.
