Georgian law enforcement have arrested 37 individuals on charges of illegally purchasing, possessing and carrying firearms and ammunition, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.

David Kiknadze, head of the ministry’s Central Criminal Police Department, said the arrests had followed three days of investigative and operational measures in capital Tbilisi and across the regions.

Searches of homes, vehicles and other properties, carried out under court warrants, led to the seizure of dozens of firearms of various types as well as large quantities of ammunition, which were taken as evidence, he added.

The offences carry prison sentences of up to seven years. Kiknadze noted that police continued to conduct round-the-clock operations nationwide to safeguard public order and security.
