Georgian law enforcement officers have confiscated around 20 illegal firearms and quantities of ammunition in nationwide operations over the past week, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported on Monday.

According to the ministry, officers from the Patrol Police, Tbilisi Police Department, and regional divisions in Guria, Kvemo Kartli, and Shida Kartli arrested 13 individuals on charges of unlawful acquisition, possession, and carrying of firearms and ammunition. Several of the suspects had prior criminal records.

During searches of the suspects’ homes, auxiliary premises, vehicles, and personal belongings, police seized various types of automatic rifles, hunting guns, and other ammunition as evidence.

The offenses are punishable by up to seven years in prison under Articles 236 (1), (3), and (4) of Georgia’s Criminal Code.

The MIA stated that all relevant police units continued to operate “around the clock” in an “uncompromising fight against crime” and to carry out preventive measures aimed at ensuring public safety throughout the country.
