Georgia’s Interior Ministry has detained the chair of the Chokhatauri city assembly, Davit Sharashidze, on charges of participating in a group assault on a police officer.

The ministry on Wednesday said two other individuals suspected of involvement were currently in hiding, and operational search measures were under way to locate and arrest them.

The alleged incident took place on 27 January at a restaurant in Ozurgeti, following a verbal altercation. Police alleged that Sharashidze and two other individuals assaulted a police officer as a group. The officer was off duty at the time of the incident and sustained injuries to the face and other parts of the body.
