Pope Leo XIV and president Zelenskyy hold first phone call

On May 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and newly elected Pope Leo XIV held their first telephone conversation.
According to a statement shared by Zelenskyy on social media, he thanked the Pope for his continued support of Ukraine and its people. The Ukrainian leader emphasized the country’s appreciation for the Pope’s calls for a just and lasting peace, as well as for the release of prisoners.
During the call, the two leaders also discussed the plight of thousands of Ukrainian children who have been deported to Russia. Zelenskyy expressed hope for the Vatican’s assistance in efforts to bring them home.
The Ukrainian president also briefed Pope Leo XIV on an agreement reached by Ukraine and its partners to begin an unconditional ceasefire starting May 12, and reiterated Ukraine’s readiness to engage in negotiations. He noted they are awaiting reciprocal steps from Russia.
Zelenskyy invited Pope Leo XIV to visit Ukraine.
Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost, was elected by the conclave on May 8. He is the first American to lead the Roman Catholic Church. His election followed the death of Pope Francis on April 21 at the age of 88 in the Vatican.
