Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili on Wednesday told Radio Liberty she would consider “any options” when it involved the country’s EU integration, amid claims by the ruling power that she may create an alliance with the opposition for the 2024 Parliamentary elections.

“I would say it in this way. If it involves the European future of Georgia, I would contemplate any possibility”, she said.

Zourabichvili, who took office with the backing of the Georgian Dream ruling party in 2017, noted that her current focus was on completing her presidential term and advancing the European integration process. She explained, “Currently, I am the president, and my mandate concludes after the parliamentary elections. The new parliament will then elect a new president, as per our constitution, marking the last time the people directly elected the president”.

She noted the importance of meeting conditions for opening accession talks with the EU if the latter granted Georgia the candidate status this week.

The President and the Government are now exchanging allegations on their stance for the country’s EU integration, with the GD calling Zourabichvili the “opposition’s President”.
