The President of Iceland, Guðni Jóhannesson, on Tuesday emphasized the importance of green energy cooperation during his Tbilisi meeting with Georgian counterpart Salome Zourabichvili.

Jóhannesson pointed out an example of such cooperation in Akhalkalaki, Georgia,  where he said an Icelandic company was involved in green energy initiatives.

“Within the framework of our visit, we focused on green energy and see potential for further collaboration in this field. Akhalkalaki serves as a testament to our shared interests, and we welcome additional partnerships in this domain. Our longstanding cooperation with Baku underscores our commitment to green initiatives, and we believe we can extend similar opportunities to Georgia. Both Tbilisi and Reykjavik boast warm baths, symbolizing the potential for mutual exchange and cooperation. Iceland has expertise in this area that we are eager to share with Georgia,” he said.

Acknowledging Georgia’s “rich literary heritage”, Jóhannesson highlighted plans for mutual cooperation between Icelandic and Georgian universities. “Tomorrow, we will sign an agreement facilitating exchanges in literature and cultural heritage, reflecting our commitment to deepening academic ties.”

He also expressed optimism about tourism prospects, citing Georgia’s “diverse landscapes”. “With its combination of coastal and mountainous regions, Georgia offers a unique experience for travelers. I anticipate increased interest from Icelanders in visiting Georgia following my visit,” he added.

Reflecting on his personal connection with Georgia, President Johannesson shared a story about the Georgian translation of his name, expressing his fondness for the local culture. “My Georgian friends affectionately referred to me as Guduna Ivanishvili [the surname of the ruling Georgian Dream party founder Bidzina Ivanishvili], a name I am honored to be known by in Georgia. I am delighted to explore the country beyond its capital and encourage international visitors to do the same”, he concluded.

The official reiterated Iceland’s readiness to cooperate with Georgia and expressed support for Georgia’s aspirations to join the EU and NATO. “Iceland stands ready to support Georgia in its endeavors, recognizing the importance of upholding international law and condemning aggression,” he affirmed.
