President Zourabichvili: ‘Tomorrow’s Parliament session is unconstitutional’

President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili has criticized the 11th convocation of Parliament’s plans to convene on November 25, calling the session unconstitutional. In a post on X, Zourabichvili outlined three reasons for her stance.

The President argued that widespread ’electoral fraud’ during the recent elections undermines the legitimacy of the incoming Parliament. Moreover, she stated that she refused to call the first session of Parliament and emphasized that Georgia’s Constitution does not permit anyone else to act as a substitute in this role. The President also noted that her appeal to the Constitutional Court regarding the validity of the parliamentary session is still awaiting resolution.

The remarks come amid heightened political tension in Georgia, as opposition parties refuse to recognize the legitimacy of the new Parliament, calling for new elections. Mass protests are planned to coincide with the session, with opposition leaders accusing the ruling Georgian Dream party of consolidating power through fraudulent means.

The Georgian Dream Majority stated they would hold the Parliament session anyway, adding it’s up to the opposition to join or continue boycotting the session.
