Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has called on the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, “to consider the will of the Georgian people” when deciding on granting candidate status to Georgia.
“I urge Ursula von der Leyen, who has a decisive role in finalizing the Commission’s decision, to consider the will of the Georgian people, the people whose soldiers stood along with German soldiers in Afghanistan when she served as the country’s Minister of Defense, in the decision-making process for the EU candidate status. The Georgian people deserve the recognition of its more than 30 – year efforts,” Zourabichvili said at a special briefing on Tuesday.
The President pledged that she would also send personal letters to the leaders of each of the 27 member states, “presenting all the political, moral and strategic arguments as to why Georgia deserves this historic decision and why leaving it off the road could be a fatal mistake.”
