The inmates are on hunger strike in the 6th prison of Rustavi, near the Georgian capital, the Special Penitentiary Service confirmed on Monday, while dismissing the initial reports by the opposition-minded Pirveli channel that 10 prisoners were on hunger strike, demanding quality medical assistance.

The agency claimed that three and not 10 inmates were on hunger strike, noting that two of the three inmates went on hunger strike after the channel aired the story on Sunday.

The Special Penitentiary Service denied allegations over poor medical services, claiming that the prisoners, who were on hunger strike, had received “all required medical services several times this month”.
