The Georgian Justice Ministry on Wednesday said it had launched proceedings over the loss of Georgian citizenship of Otar Partskhaladze, a former Prosecutor General of Georgia in 2013 who was last week sanctioned by the US for alleged cooperation with Russian intelligence, claiming the former official had “possibly” obtained Russian citizenship.

Receiving a foreign citizenship without a previous consent for dual citizenship by relevant agencies in Georgia meant an automatic loss of Georgian citizenship.

“After the completion of the relevant procedures, a conclusion on the termination of Georgian citizenship will be sent to the President of Georgia as soon as possible”, the body said.

The statement came following the controversies related to Partskhaladze and the National Bank of Georgia, which on Tuesday exempted Georgian citizens from international sanctions without the judgment of domestic courts.
