Opponents of the proposed Transparency of Foreign Influence draft law are set to rally today at the legislative body in central Tbilisi, with demonstrations scheduled to commence at 19:00. Organizers have announced that, in consideration of ongoing religious observances, the protests will be conducted with a distinct tone.
Expressing steadfast dedication to their cause, organizers have denounced what they perceive as oppressive measures by law enforcement, particularly highlighting actions taken during Monday, Thursday, and Red Friday, which they claim show a disregard for religious holidays. They have emphasized their refusal to allow such tactics to go unchallenged, especially when they impact vulnerable groups like women and children.
“With the religious significance of this week in mind, our demonstrations will echo this solemnity,” affirmed the organizers.
Participants have been urged to anticipate potential provocations and to comport themselves with the utmost decorum, maintaining cleanliness and dignity throughout the event. Additionally, attendees are encouraged to bring candles to symbolize the peaceful nature of their assembly.
As the protest coincides with the possibility of inclement weather, the “Dafion” movement, a prominent voice within the opposition, has advised demonstrators to prepare accordingly.
The proposed Transparency of Foreign Influence bill has sparked controversy since its introduction, with critics arguing that it could stifle free speech and infringe upon individual liberties.
