This morning, Nika Melia, the leader of the opposition, the leader of the United National Movement, was detained by riot police in the party office, where hundreds of supporters were with him.
Following the decision of other opposition leaders, the opposition and its supporters gathered on the central street of Tbilisi, where the events of April 9, 1989 took place, to protest against Tbilisi's governorship in Russia, which began several times in June 2019, when Russian Communist Gavrilov turned out.
Those gathered in front of the parliament on June 20-21 protested against this fact. The investigation accuses Nika Melia of leading the group violence and participating in it, that at that time Nika Melia addressed the people gathered there, their place was not outside the parliament and they should have been in the parliament building. After that, the situation became tense and the people gathered there confronted the law enforcers.
According to the verdict of June 27, 2019, Nika Melia was sentenced to 30,000 GEL bail as a precaution, then the parliament lifted his parliamentary immunity for the first time and the court verdict was executed. He paid 30,000 GEL for the first time, but after the electronic bracelet was demonstratively removed at a rally in front of the parliament on November 1, 2020, the Prosecutor General's Office again appealed to the court to release Nika Melia 100,000 GEL bail, but the court set 40,000 GEL, which he did not pay.
Nika Melia was sentenced to imprisonment by the Tbilisi City Court on February 17. The next day, February 18, Giorgi Gakharia resigned as Prime Minister. In this regard, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has temporarily postponed the planned event in Melia's case.
On February 22, the parliament of the tenth convocation expressed confidence in the government of Irakli Gharibashvili, and on the morning of February 23, the special forces entered the office of the "National Movement". He used pepper spray and arrested Nika Melia. He is currently being held in custody, but his colleagues say they are embarking on a liberation struggle that will inevitably end in victory. Georgia will never return to the Soviet Union and will not become a Russian province.
The arrest of Nika Melia was met with strong reactions from Georgia's friendly states, with leaders of various countries, including the United States, calling on the Georgian authorities to do everything possible to defuse the situation and not to step back.
