Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared an “Easter truce,” announcing a temporary suspension of all Russian military operations in Ukraine during the Orthodox Easter weekend, according to Russian state media reports.

Speaking at a meeting with top military officials in the Kremlin, Putin said the decision was made following a briefing from Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, who reported on the situation along the front lines. The truce took effect on Friday, April 19, at 6:00 p.m. and will last until midnight on Sunday, April 21.

“For humanitarian reasons, starting today at 6:00 p.m. and lasting through Monday, the Russian side declares an Easter truce. During this period, all military activity from Russia’s side must cease. We assume that the Ukrainian side will follow our example. At the same time, our troops must remain prepared to repel any violations of the ceasefire or provocations and aggressive actions from the enemy,” Putin stated.
