A questionnaire with 369 questions received recently in response to Georgia’s EU membership bid will be made public, Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili stated today, after the 62nd session of the Government Commission for EU Integration.
The Georgian government should answer the questions and the EU will decide whether or not to grant Georgia a candidate country status.
“We know that there is a very high public interest in the document, therefore, a meeting of the Government Commission chaired by the Prime Minister of Georgia has been held and a decision has been made to make the questionnaire public. We will ensure that the document is available to all interested parties,” Darchiashvili said.
The opposition demanded that the questionnaire be made public.
Eight members of the parliamentary opposition have written a letter to EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi over the issue.
The ruling Georgian Dream party chair Irakli Kobakhidze said yesterday that they would make such a decision after consulting with the EU representatives.
The Georgian government applied for EU membership in early March, shortly after Ukraine did so after the Russian invasion.
Initially Georgia had plans to apply for EU membership by 2024.
