Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Georgian parliament, on Tuesday said existing relations between his country’s and Ukraine’s legislative bodies were “very warm and friendly”, in response to the opposition lawmaker’s question about the Georgian delegation’s refusal to arrive in Kyiv on the war anniversary.

Papuashvili said “no official invitation” had been made by Kyiv, with the issue only raised during the latest exchange between the heads of the friendship groups in the two countries’ parliaments.

He also slammed the part of opposition MPs for “not-protecting” the state interests when the country’s government was receiving “incorrect and unfounded” allegations over alleged torture of imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili in prison or Russia’s evading international sanctions with the use of the Georgian territory or its financial institutions.

He reiterated Georgia was “most supportive” to Ukraine in its defence from the Russian invasion considering its circumstances – the continued occupation of its territories by the latter and absence of any international security umbrella, noting that the Ukrainian lawmakers were thankful for the support.
