Opposition politician Roman Gotsiridze has criticized the nature of investments being made in Georgia, arguing that the issue was not where the money came from but what it was used for.
According to Gotsiridze, there was a stark difference between the types of investments the United Arab Emirates planned to make in the United States and those being carried out in Georgia.
“The Emirates are planning to invest about 1.4 trillion US dollars in the United States over the next decade. Let’s look at what kind of investments these are - they are directed toward production and high-tech industries,” he said.
Gotsiridze outlined key sectors of Emirati investment in the US, including:
Technology: artificial intelligence, semiconductors, data centers, and infrastructure.
Energy and chemical production: natural gas extraction, energy infrastructure, and low-carbon technologies.
Manufacturing and industry: development of US industrial facilities and production capacity.
Critical resources and minerals: aluminum production and processing of rare minerals.
“In contrast, what kinds of investments are being made in Georgia?” Gotsiridze asked. “The construction and sale of luxury cottages, mainly to foreign citizens - often for permanent residence. Isn’t there a difference between the investments the Emirates plan to make in the US and those being made here? No one would oppose the kind of investments they intend to undertake in America. The problem lies not in the origin of investments but in their substance,” he concluded.
