German Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee Chair calls for new elections in Georgia

Michael Roth, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag, has urged Georgia’s ruling party to call new elections as the only way to restore public trust. Roth made the statement following a meeting with opposition leaders.

“The situation is difficult, but it must be clearly stated that this is not an internal conflict between the ruling party on one side and civil society and the opposition on the other. It is a serious conflict between autocracy and liberal democracy,” Roth said.

He emphasized the responsibility of European leaders to speak out when democracy is under pressure.

“I want to address the ruling party: the only chance to resolve the situation is to call new elections to rebuild trust,” Roth added.
