Khatia Dekanoidze, an opposition MP,  on Tuesday voiced skepticism regarding recent legislative proposals aimed at amending Georgia’s constitution to “protect family values”, suggesting they might be orchestrated by the ruling power to discredit the opposition.

While addressing journalists, Dekanoidze emphasized the citizens of Georgia were preoccupied with more pressing issues, notably pertaining to family values and the protection of minors.

She contended the proposed measures were not resonating with the general populace and are instead perceived as a form of political propaganda. Dekanoidze further implied such initiatives were engineered to perpetuate the ruling party’s influence, particularly that of Bidzina Ivanishvili – the founder of the GD –  but expressed doubt about their efficacy.

The ruling majority is preparing to introduce two constitutional initiatives, notably centered on countering “LGBT propaganda” and reinforcing family values and minors’ protection.

These initiatives include amendments to Article 30 of the Constitution, concerning marriage, motherhood, and children’s rights. The proposed changes aim to incorporate provisions safeguarding family values and minors through a constitutional law.

The draft constitutional law, titled “On Family Values and Protection of Minors,” encompasses eight key points, outlining various prohibitions and measures intended to uphold traditional family structures and safeguard minors’ welfare.
